Drug Abuse

Most people, who use drugs like heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamines, do not have a substance abuse problem. Using drugs is only a disorder if the drug use causes your life to become unmanageable. Thus, in treatment it helps to focus on the unmanageable, and how to minimize it, rather than on the very narrow focus of the drug.

Using drugs can often be an isolating and shameful experience. Most addicts feel ashamed of their drug use, and may isolate themselves from any avenues of support including treatment. We at The Center for Personal Development strive to create a nurturing, non-shaming environment that focuses on strengths rather than weaknesses.

Alcohol Abuse

Alcoholism has been hard to define for some. However, the discussed alcohol abuse or problematic use for at least one month, and alcohol dependency or problematic use on a much higher scales. Alcoholism is the same as alcohol dependency. About 35% of Americans abstain, 55% drink up to 3x a week, and 11% drink once a day and about 13% of Americans can be classified as alcoholic at some time in their lives.

There are four main kinds of alcoholics:

  • Alpha - heavy genetic component, born alcoholic
  • Beta - bingers
  • Gamma - Northern Europe Pattern, long history of increasing use and maintained controlled drinking, followed by a plateau, them a "slippery slope" into alcoholism
  • Delta - Southern Europe Pattern, seen in Asian and African Americans as well, similar to Northern Europe Pattern but shorter plateau
