What is Neuropsychological Testing?
Neuropsychological testing is a modern, comprehensive, scientifically-based assessment process which provides diagnostic clarification and functional understanding for patients with cognitive, behavioral, or psychological disorders. The measures used for these assessments are highly accurate, standardized instruments, recognized throughout the medical professions as the leading ways to understand these aspects of functioning.
A neuropsychological evaluation includes an in-depth clinical interview with you or your loved one, a series of paper and pencil “tests,” and a feedback session that explains, in easily understandable language, the
evaluation and provides you with applicable recommendations for home, school, and work. The paper and pencil tests are a series of sophisticated, specialized, and world recognized tests that are used to elicit particular areas of the brain to function in a manner that is similar to the way the brain would conduct itself in everyday activities. While the brain works as an integrated whole, specific parts of the brain are responsible for specific abilities, such as language, vision, and memory.
The components of a neuropsychological assessment pinpoint parts of the brain to see how they are functioning. Your level of functioning is then compared to the level of functioning that is expected given such factors as age, gender, and level of education, therefore providing you and your family valuable information about strengths and weaknesses: this information is vital to ensure you or your loved one are receiving the best possible treatments, support services, and accommodations. After your neuropsychological evaluation is conducted, your neuropsychologist completes a comprehensive report which you receive and which will be explained in full to you, your loved one, or your support services provider.
Here at the Center for Personal Development, our neuropsychological assessment provides results and recommendations based on the patient's specific situation and challenges. Each case is individually tailored to the needs and concerns of that particular patient in the context of his or her current landscape.
